Anywhere you’ve got excess moisture, you could potentially have mold. This, unfortunately, includes your HVAC system. You could have mold growing in your ductwork, AC evaporator coils, and drip pans. The places are the perfect spots for mold to grow. Mold can be incredibly dangerous to the health of you and your family and can even cause damage to your home or HVAC system. We can help with a moldy HVAC system.
Moldy HVAC System
Mold is a naturally occurring fungus that floats in microscopic particles through the air. When these particles land in a moist environment, they grow.
Mold growth, although naturally occurring, can be a huge problem. If mold begins to grow in the ductwork of your home, mold spores are then circulated through the air that you breathe in your home each time your unit runs. Most mold will only produce allergens, causing allergy problems for you and your family. This can include breathing problems, itchy and water eyes, a cough, or sinus problems.
However, there are other molds which can be incredibly toxic to your health. These molds are referred to as “toxic molds” and can cause brain damage, nerve damage, and even death in some cases.
Fortunately, there are some easy ways to look out for mold in your HVAC system.
1. Look. The easiest way to spot mold growing in your home is to look for it. If your home is particularly humid, you should do this at least once a week. Check all your registers, vents, visible ductwork, evaporator coils, and drip pans. Also check for any pooling water, blocked drains, or condensation on the outsides of your vents and insides of your registers. Excess water should be cleaned up, as it encourages mold growth.
2. Smell. Since you are unable to see much of your HVAC system, you can also simply use your sense of smell. When mold grows and blows through your HVAC system, it can give off the smell of mildew. If you begin smelling mildew every time your HVAC system runs, turn it off, wait 20 minutes, turn it back on and see if the smell comes back when your unit begins to run again.
3. Call the pros. If you don’t see or smell mold, chances are that you don’t have a problem. However, if you’d like to be 100% sure you can always call an HVAC professional and have mold testing done on your home. Although this can be costly, you’ll definitely have peace of mind that there is no mold growth in your HVAC system.
