Why Do You Need It and How Does it Work?
An indoor air handler is one of the main components of your HVAC system, and is used to circulate and regulate your indoor air. It has the important tasks of circulating cooled air throughout your home, making your system more energy efficient and creating higher quality air.
What is an indoor air handler in an HVAC system?
Air handlers help circulate air during the heating and cooling process. The air handler itself is an indoor component of your HVAC designed to work as a partner with the outdoor component.
Air ducts are attached to the air handler. Which works with the evaporator coil to take heat out of the building and replace it with cool air.
If you use a split-system air conditioner, then you definitely need an air handler. In Georgia’s climate, it is common to have a split-system (meaning you have a unit both indoors and outdoors). So you can maintain a comfortable temperature inside your home all year.
Quality HVAC Work – Indoor Air Handler
Because it doesn’t get too cold in Georgia, an air handler should be able to meet all of your heating needs as well.
The air handler circulates air throughout your home and is made up of three main components: air filter, coil and blower. The handler pulls air from the outside in, circulates it over the coils, then uses the blower to distribute the cooled or heated air throughout your home using a duct system.
Air filter: The air filter lives between the vent and the fan. Its job is to ensure air pulled into the HVAC system is purified before being cooled.
Coil: Coils actually cool the air pulled into your system. The system uses refrigerant to pump high-temperature, high-pressure gas into your air handler, passes over the coils, and into your duct system.
Blower: The blower uses a fan to send all of the cooled air back into your home through the ductwork.
How do air handlers differ from air conditioners?
Air handlers are a part of your overall HVAC unit, but they don’t replace air conditioning systems. Instead, air handlers house the equipment to move air throughout your home.
It is typically located inside your house, and works in conjunction with both the heating and cooling systems. Air handlers are sometimes confused with a furnace. They include a coil which is either used for heating or cooling depending on the setting.
On the other hand, air conditioners are typically located outside of your home. They work to pull heat out of your home through the use of a condenser. Air moves through your ductwork and cools over a refrigerant coil.
Instead of adding more cold air to your home; air conditioners actually put hot air out, then send the same air back into your home without the heat.
