What if we told you your sunroom could be used year-round? A three season room is the perfect place to experience the outdoors from the comfort of your home throughout the spring, summer and fall. Unfortunately, one of the most challenging parts of a three season room is controlling the temperature year-round. Without insulation, your room may become useless in the winter.

One option is to add a portable heating and cooling device to your room, such as a space heater to warm up the room on uncomfortable cold days. However, space heaters can be fairly inefficient and can end up costing you a lot more money and energy in the long run.

Instead, consider installing a ductless heating system.

Ductless heating technology, also known as a ductless mini-split system, works independently of your main HVAC system and can be designed specifically for your three (soon-to-be) four season room. A ductless system can be designed to provide either air conditioning only or air conditioning and heating both. Here’s how it works:

Maintaining the perfect temperature. Mini-split ductless heating systems are completely independent of your heating and cooling system in the rest of your home. There are two main components of a ductless heating system: the outdoor compressor which includes a condensing coil, and indoor air handling unit. Instead of using ductwork to connect the two, the indoor unit connects to the outdoor compressor and distributes air throughout your room. The indoor unit is installed on a wall in your room, instead of a closet or basement. This setup allows you to set your unit to exactly the right temperature without affecting the rest of the house.

Saving money and energy. Since you control the mini-split ductless heating system separate from your full HVAC system, it won’t increase your energy bill by very much. Heating systems that use ductwork often lose up to 30 percent of their energy pushing air through the system. With the use of a separate thermostat and ductless technology, you can turn it on and off as needed, which will save you money and energy in the long run.

Sealing your three-season room. Before installing a ductless mini-split system, make sure that all of your windows and doors are adequately sealed. You could end up wasting money and energy if the air from your newly installed technology is leaking out of your three-season room. This is especially important during the winter, as your ductless heat exchanger will need to work harder to keep you warmer.
