As the temperatures warm up and we head into spring, we tend to spend less time indoors. This means we’re relying less on our HVAC system to keep us warm inside. The changing of the seasons is always a good time to schedule an HVAC check-up, in order to ensure your system is working efficiently so you can save on energy and bills.

One of the easiest things you can do this time of year is adjust your thermostat by 10-15 degrees for up to eight hours. This will save you around 10 percent per year on your energy bill. A programmable or smart thermostat can do this for you, without sacrificing your comfort.

Have you ever considered upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat in your home? They can add a great deal of comfort and savings. Here are three ways a smart thermostat can help prepare you for the warmer weather this spring and summer:

  • Control anywhere, anytime. The best perk of installing a smart thermostat is you can download an app to control it from your phone or tablet from anywhere you have a good Internet connection. This is especially beneficial this time of year when the temperatures can be unstable. If we get an unusually warm day, you can turn up the air conditioning before you get home. Or, if the temperature drops one day, you can turn the heat on and come home to a warm and cozy house. One of the best benefits is if you go on a long weekend trip or even longer vacation and forget to turn your air off, you can do it quickly from the app, without losing any cost or energy.
  • Zoning your home. The zoning feature on smart thermostats allows you to turn the air off in certain rooms in your home. This comes in handy if there are infrequently used areas of your home, such as guest rooms, and offers a great way to cut on your energy bill. It also leaves you with the most comfort, only cooling the rooms you spend the most time in and evening out the rest of the house.
  • Set reminds, receive updates and gather reports. Basic HVAC maintenance can be hard to remember to keep up with each month. A smart thermostat reminds you when your air filter needs to be replaced, which will save money and improve the indoor air quality in your home. A smart thermostat will also send you updates if it detects an anomaly in your house or if the temperature doesn’t match up to what you’ve programmed ahead of time. Finally, a smart thermostat will send you monthly reports so you can analyze your energy usage and track savings over time. From there, you can continue adjusting your settings to stay comfortable and save on costs even more!
